How a Healthy Diet Can Help With ADHD
As we all know, having a child with ADHD can be a handful at times. However, according to the study "A randomised controlled trial into the effects of food on ADHD" stated that "Our results show that a carefully supervised few foods diet in young children with ADHD, followed for 5 weeks at the most, can exhibit substantial changes in behaviour." The study further stated that "Seventy percent of the children showed behavioural improvements of 50% or more according to the ratings of parents and teachers and did not meet the DSM-IV-criteria for ADHD anymore." Here are some food suggestions that may help your children with ADHD.
It is important to have a high protein breakfast such as :
- Eggs
- Peanut Butter on an English Muffin or Bread
- Fruits such as oranges and apples
- Lunch Meat such as turkey and ham
The most important thing is not to have the child indulge in sugary cereals and candy. Make food items like candy a treat for receiving a high grade for school or to reward good behavior. High sugar cereals has been proven to cause ADHD symptoms.
For a mid day snack, you can include:
- Various Nuts such as peanuts or walnuts
- More fruits like bananas or pineapple
Some possible lunch/dinner ideas may include:
- High Omega-3 Acidy like various fish such as tuna or salmon (if you children will touch them)
- Various pastas such as spaghetti or noodles
- Include vegetables for they are a great source of carbohydrates
By following these guidelines you can help improve your children's ADHD symptoms and also provide a nutritious meal for your children.
